Contact lenses
are available for two different wear schedules.
Daily wear:
meaning you remove them before sleeping.
Extended wear:
overnight wear
Most extended wear lenses are proved to be
worn without removal for up to seven
days. Two brands are approved for up to 30days
continuous wear: CIBA Visions Night and Day,
and PureVision by Bausch and Lomb. Wearing
contact lenses overnight even for a short
period come with a greater health risk compared
with nightly removal.
These new revolutionary lenses use a special
material called silicone hydrogel. They allow
up to six times more oxygen through to the
eye than standard lenses, enabling the eye
to remain healthy and providing excellent
comfort. You can reduce the risk of developing
an infection by following the Optometrist’s
instructions for lens replacement and care.
Studies have shown that most of the infections
and complications are related to improper
cleaning and disinfecting.
The lenses are usually fitted as daily wear
lenses and if the eyes show no sign of ill
effects, overnight wear is commenced.
If you use continuous wear lenses, we recommend
an up to date pair of spectacles for when
you need to remove the lenses, such as if
the eyes are irritated or during periods of
ill health. It is now recognised that swimming
while wearing contact lenses, showering, hot-
tub use and smoking can be associated with
complications and should generally be avoided.
