Diabetic
patients are recommended and eye examination annually.
Diabetes can affect the eyesight and diabetic changes
may first become apparent in the eye. It is therefore
important that diabetic patient are screened regularly
and Optometrist informs the patients Doctor of the
results and any changes in ocular health. Diabetic
screening eye examinations involve a regular eye
examination followed by drops which dilate the pupil
to enable the Optometrist see the vessels at the
back of the eye clearly. Once the vessels are clearly
visible the Optometrist is able to photograph the
vessels using the latest technology retinal imaging
camera, these images are kept minor, may be monitored
and recorded. Diabetic eye screening is available
free of change to all diabetic patients funded by
the health services.
